AI can miss or misstate things. Summaries and answers from AI tools, ChatPDF included, can leave out important details or get them wrong. Check anything that matters against the document itself, especially legal, medical, financial and exam material.

Key points
  • In Safari, tap Share, then Markup, annotate if you like, and choose Save File To to save the page as a PDF. 1
  • When a link opens a PDF in Safari, tap Share and Save to Files to keep the original file. 2
  • Mail attachments can be saved with Save to Files; Mail’s documented options for the message itself are Print and sharing. 3,4
  • To keep an email’s text as a PDF, paste it into a note and export the note as a PDF. 5

Saving something as a PDF on iPhone keeps a fixed copy you can read offline, annotate, share or file away: an article, a booking confirmation, a policy page or an important email. Here are the methods Apple documents in the iPhone User Guide.

Save a web page as a PDF in Safari

  1. Open the page in Safari.
  2. Tap the More button, then tap Share. (The button you tap first differs if your tab layout is set to Bottom or Top.)
  3. Tap Markup. Use the tools to highlight, draw or write on the page if you want to.
  4. Tap Done, then choose Save File To.
  5. Enter a name and tap Save 1.

Before saving, close cookie banners and pop-ups so they do not cover the text. Pages that load content as you scroll may need a full scroll first so everything is on the page. Open the saved PDF and check that the parts you need are there and that you can select the text; then file it in a folder you will remember 6.

Save a PDF you opened in Safari

If a link opens a PDF (a manual, a form, a research paper), save the original rather than a printout of the page:

  1. With the PDF open in Safari, tap Share.
  2. Tap Save to Files.
  3. Enter a name and tap Save 2.

The original file usually keeps its text layer and layout intact, which matters if you later want to search it or summarize it.

Save email attachments as files

In Mail, touch and hold the attachment and choose Save to Files; you can also choose Share to open it with another app 3. A PDF attachment can be opened in the Books app as well 7. If you cannot find an old attachment, Mail can filter a mailbox to show only messages with attachments 3.

Save the email itself

Apple's iPhone User Guide does not describe a dedicated "save email as PDF" command in Mail. What it documents for a message is printing: in the message, tap the menu button and tap Print, or tap an attachment and choose Print 4. Printing needs an AirPrint printer on the same Wi-Fi network.

A documented way to get the email text into a PDF file uses Notes:

  1. In Mail, select the text of the message (touch and hold, then drag the grab points, or triple-tap a paragraph) and tap Copy 8.
  2. Paste it into a new note. Add the sender, date and subject at the top so the copy is self-explanatory.
  3. In the note, tap the More button, then tap Markup. Mark up the pages if you like, then save the PDF 5.

Apple notes one limit: if the note contains a multi-page PDF or scan, the exported PDF includes only its first page 5. Save attachments separately with Save to Files.

Where ChatPDF helps

Once a long article, report or policy is saved as a PDF in Files, ChatPDF can import it from inside the app through the document picker and answer questions about it, or give you a summary and key takeaways. ChatPDF does not appear in the share sheet, so save the PDF to Files first, then add it in the app. The PDF needs selectable text, and answers can miss or misstate details, so check anything important against the saved page. Common questions

Is the saved web page PDF searchable?

Pages saved from Safari normally contain real text, but always check by selecting a word in the saved file. If you cannot, treat it like a scan. 9

Can I save several emails as one PDF?

Apple does not document a way to do this in Mail. You can paste several messages into one note and export it, or save attachments to Files and combine them in Preview with Insert from File. 5,10

Where do saved PDFs go?

You choose the location when you tap Save to Files or Save File To, for example a folder in iCloud Drive. Search for the name in the Files app to find it again. 2,11
