How to search for text in a PDF on iPhone
Updated 13 October 2026 · ChatPDF guides · 7 sources
AI can miss or misstate things. Summaries and answers from AI tools, ChatPDF included, can leave out important details or get them wrong. Check anything that matters against the document itself, especially legal, medical, financial and exam material.
- In the Preview app, open the PDF, tap the search button and type a word or phrase; options include Whole Words and Match Case. 1
- In Notes, Find in Note with Include Attachments searches PDFs attached to a note. 2
- Files search finds documents by file name, folder name or document type, not by the words inside them. 3
- If a search finds nothing in text you can see, the PDF is probably a scan without a text layer.
To find a word inside a PDF on iPhone, open the document in the Preview app (iOS 26 and later) and use its search. Below are the exact steps, two other places where search works, and what to do when a search comes back empty.
Search inside a PDF with Preview
- Open the Preview app and open the PDF (from Recents, Shared or Browse).
- Tap the search button and enter a word or phrase. A phrase is searched as an exact phrase.
- For tighter results, tap the options in the search field: Whole Words skips matches inside longer words, and Match Case only matches the same capitalization.
- Use the arrows to jump to the next or previous result, and close the search when you are done 1.
If you already know the page you need, Go to Page in the same menu is quicker than scrolling 1.
Search PDFs stored in Notes
If you keep PDFs in notes (or scanned them there), Notes has two kinds of search 2:
- Across all notes: tap the search field and type. Apple says this covers typed and handwritten text in supported languages, objects in images, and text in scanned documents.
- Inside one note: open the note, tap the More button, tap Find in Note, then open the options and select Include Attachments to search PDFs and other attachments too.
To put a PDF into a note, touch and hold it in Files or Mail, tap Share, tap Notes, choose a note and tap Save 4.
Find the right file first
The search field in the Files app looks at file names, folder names and document types 3. It will find "Insurance policy 2026.pdf" but not a phrase from page 12 of that file. Two habits make files easy to find: give each PDF a descriptive name with Rename, and add tags to related documents 5.
Search tips that save time
- Search for the rare word. "Deductible" finds the right clause faster than "amount".
- Try variants. Search the stem ("terminat" catches terminate and termination) with Whole Words off, then try synonyms and abbreviations.
- Numbers and symbols: amounts may be written "1,000", "1000" or "1 000". Search for the most distinctive digits.
- Hyphenation: words split across lines may not match. Search for a shorter part of the word.
- Read around each hit. A match tells you where a word appears, not what the sentence means. Read the paragraph, and check definitions sections for how the document uses the term.
When a search finds nothing
If you can see a word on the page but search cannot find it, the usual causes are:
| Cause | How to check | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The PDF is a scan (picture only) | Try to select a word; nothing highlights | Add a text layer with OCR: see scanned PDF OCR |
| Different spelling or form | Search a shorter fragment | Turn off Whole Words, try variants |
| Text stored oddly in the file | Copy a word and paste it into a note; it looks garbled or spaced out | Search for a different, nearby word |
The last case happens because a PDF records characters and their positions on the page rather than words and sentences, and some files place letters in ways that tools reassemble imperfectly 6.
Search by keyword or ask a question?
Keyword search is exact: it shows every place a word appears, and it never invents anything. Its weakness is that you need to know the word. If you are asking "can I cancel early?" the answer may be in a clause that never uses the word "cancel".
That is where an AI chat-with-PDF tool can help. ChatPDF searches your document by meaning and writes an answer from the most relevant passages, so a question in plain language can find a clause with different wording. It has limits: it only reads the passages it selects, answers do not include page numbers, and it can miss or misstate things. Use the answer as a pointer, then confirm it with Preview's exact search, as shown in how to ask questions to a PDF and how chat-with-PDF tools work.
Common questions
Can I search inside a PDF from the Files app?
Files search looks at file names, folder names and document types. To search the words inside a PDF, open it in Preview and use its search. 3,1
How do I search for an exact phrase?
Type the phrase in Preview’s search field. Apple says a phrase is searched as that exact phrase; add Match Case if capitalization matters. 1
Why does search skip some pages?
Those pages are probably scanned images without a text layer, which is common in documents with signed or stamped pages. Use OCR to add text. 7
