Privacy Policy
Last Updated: October 14, 2026
ChatPDF ("we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application.
1. Information We Collect
1.1 Information You Provide
- PDF Documents: When you add a PDF, the app extracts its text on your device and uploads that text and the file name to our server; the PDF file itself is not uploaded (app versions before 1.0.8 also sent the file, which was not kept after processing). We keep the text (split into passages) and a search index of it so you can keep chatting with the document.
- Chat Messages: Your questions and conversations with the AI are processed to generate responses.
- Subscription Information: Payment processing is handled by Apple through the App Store. We receive confirmation of your subscription status but do not have access to your payment details.
1.2 Automatically Collected Information
- Device Identifier: A unique anonymous identifier to manage your account and subscription.
- Usage Data: Information about how you use the app, including features accessed and interaction patterns.
- Error Logs: Technical information to help us diagnose and fix issues.
2. How We Use Your Information
- To provide and improve our PDF chat service
- To process your documents and generate AI responses
- To manage your subscription and account
- To send important service updates
- To analyze usage patterns and improve the app
- To detect and prevent fraud or abuse
3. Data Storage and Security
Your documents are processed securely:
- Our server runs on Cloudflare. It stores your documents' text passages and their search index. Cloudflare Workers AI builds the index and helps find the passages relevant to your question
- When you ask a question or request a summary, quiz or flashcards, your question and the relevant passages of your document are sent to Anthropic, PBC (Claude models), which writes the answer. If Claude is unavailable, they are sent to Replicate, Inc., which runs Meta Llama models, as a backup
- Before the first upload the app asks for your permission to share documents with these services; you can withdraw it at any time in the app's Settings
- We use industry-standard encryption for data transmission
- Document content is used only to answer your questions and create summaries; it is not sold or used for advertising, and we do not share it with anyone other than the services listed in section 4
4. Third-Party Services
We use the following third-party services:
- Cloudflare: Hosting, storage of document text and search index (Cloudflare Workers AI builds the index)
- Anthropic (Claude): Writes answers and summaries from your question and the relevant passages. Under Anthropic's commercial terms, data sent through its API is not used to train its models
- Replicate (Meta Llama): Backup for writing answers when Claude is unavailable. According to Replicate's documentation, data of predictions created through its API is removed automatically after about an hour
- RevenueCat: For subscription management
- Apple App Store: For payment processing
Each service has its own privacy policy governing how they handle data.
5. Data Retention
- Your documents: A document's text passages and search index are kept until you delete the document in the app, which removes them from our server. Your chat history is stored on your device.
- Active Subscribers: Document data is retained while your subscription is active to provide service continuity.
- Inactive Accounts: Data may be deleted after 90 days of account inactivity.
- Upon Request: You can request deletion of your data at any time by contacting us.
6. Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Access your personal data
- Request correction of inaccurate data
- Request deletion of your data
- Export your data in a portable format
- Opt out of non-essential data collection
7. Children's Privacy
ChatPDF is not intended for children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us.
